This record sleeve was made for the ‘elevator music’ genre, formally known as Muzak. The imagery is driven by an in depth investigation into the formation and lasting legacy of Muzak.
The concept of brackets initially came from wanting to define the position of the perfume on the canvas, a series of shapes were tested and evaluated. The variety of brackets made it the most successful option. Information within brackets is usually supplementary; should it be removed, the meaning of the sentence would remain unchanged. This ties in to the ‘ignorable as is interesting’ notion that describes Muzak. Having the brackets change complexity with each sleeve iteration also relates to the record’s title ‘Stimulus Progression.’
